CD - COMPACT DISC

The first CD standard 1980 was published in form of the "Red Book" for CD audio by Sony and Philips. The CD audio was introduced for the first time at the "Funkausstellung" 1981 in Berlin. In the year 1982 series production of CD audio officially started with Polygram at that time. In the first version of the "Red Book" the maximum capacity of the Compact Disc audio reached 74 minutes and 30 Seconds and/or 650MB fixed. The basis for this definition was the first publication of this new format which contained the 9. Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven. The maximum diameter CD of 12cm results from the desire of the developers, that new data media should not be larger than the cover of a conventional MC (musiccassette) . And this cover had a diagonal of 12cm. Following to the Pre-recorded CD format 1988 the recordable form of CD was developed, the CD-R. This Form of CD came on the market in 1994. In 1996 then the re-writable form to that CD was introduced, the CD-RW.

DVD - DIGITALLY VERSATILE DISC

The DVD standard was introduced by the DVD forum in the year 1996. First publications in the form of DVD video were brought in November 1996 on the Japanese market. The DVD format reached the mass-market in 2000. There are several known forms of the DVD format. A DVD contains information as audio, video or ROM. A Pre-recorded DVD can have different sizes of storage capacities.

Blu-Ray Disc

Blu-ray Disc (also known as Blu-ray or BD) is a high-density optical disc format for the storage of digital information, including high-definition video. The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser. A maximum capacity Blu-ray Disc (dual layer variant) can store 50 GB, almost six times the maximum capacity of a DVD. Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of companies representing consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion picture production. The standard is covered by several patents belonging to different companies. As of March 2007, a joint licensing agreement for all the relevant patents had not yet been finalized

CD-R - COMPACT DISC RECORDABLE

The CD-R (Compact Disc Recordable) is a one time recordabel Disc. It has specified capacities from 650 to 700MB. The CD-R is specified in the "Orange Book part 2" of Sony and Philips.

DVD-R & DVD+R

There are two DVD Recordable standards known.
The DVD-R standard and the DVD+R standard. Main difference between the DVD+R standard and the DVD-R standard is in the addressing when burning the blank as well as with the numeric Aperture of the lens and with the wavelength of the write laser.
